Which Allograft Should I Pick?

In recent years, the healthcare field has continued to invest in product innovation, even though potential market disruptors lurked on the horizon1. But where can you draw the line on having to choose between the latest & greatest vs. tried & true? Do you have to? You’ve been taught one thing, but then your colleagues or medical sales reps show you what they think is the latest and greatest, and now you’re faced with a tough choice. All you want is the best outcome for your patient. The use of [...]

Pain in the foot!

In our lifetime, 1 in 10 of us will suffer from plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is pain on the bottom of one or both heels, caused by irritation to the plantar fascia, which are the dense tissue bands that connect the heels to the toes. This pain can affect young and old and there really isn't a clear cut answer as to how we get it. Making small changes in footwear to physical therapy has proven to bring relief to many, others require more care. Often cortisone injections are administered [...]

PRP is Here to Stay: Google It

You might be hearing a lot about platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in the news these days, with high-profile athletes receiving treatments to not only fix their injuries but also prevent them. The now-retired Kobe Bryant was a fan years ago, going to Germany for PRP treatments before they were widely available in the US. In a short six years, biologics have gone from Kobe’s age-defying intriguing knee treatment to Lonzo Ball getting a PRP shot and sitting out a month as par for the pro athlete’s course. Angels rookie and Japanese [...]

A Very Brief History of Regenerative Medicine

The NIH defines regenerative medicine as stem cells and other technologies, such as engineered biomaterials and gene editing, to repair or replace damaged cells, tissues, or organs. The term “regenerative medicine” was first used in a 1992 academic paper in the context of technologies that would impact hospitals, but the concept reaches back further. And if you’re a salamander, which you probably aren’t if you’re reading this, regeneration is just a fact of tail life. Fun fact for humans, though:  we actually have the ability to regenerate a severed fingertip [...]

AAOS Annual Meeting 2018: Recap

The Genesis Biologics team set up shop once again this year at the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Annual Meeting 2018. Held in New Orleans, our time at the meeting was a busy three days (March 7-9) of exhibitions, seminars, and networking. What was the buzz? Regenerative medicine was the primary focus for our booth. We had a lot of traffic regarding our Genesis PRP products following the March 7 seminar for surgeons that touched on the topic. Our Genesis Amnion products garnered a lot of interest as well. We enjoyed meeting [...]

An Intro to Amnion

You might have heard “amnion” in the same sentence as “pregnancy” or even “regenerative medicine.” What’s the connection? During pregnancy, an embryo is protected by the placenta, which consists of two membranes. Amnion, short for amniotic membrane, is the innermost membrane. (Chorion is the outer membrane). Thin and tough, the placenta fills with amniotic fluid and expands as the fetus develops. Amnion has properties that lend itself to wound-healing and tissue repair. Although we associate regenerative medicine with recent decades, amnion has actually been used in the medical field for [...]

This is a Job for…PRP

So many acronyms, so little time. It can be a challenge to keep track. Especially if you’re in a doctor’s office, saw it on a brochure, and can’t quite remember what it is or what it does. We’ll help you remember this one. Think of PRP, or Platelet-Rich Plasma, as your personal superhero. It’s a substance that comes from you, undergoes processing, and is reintroduced to your system to facilitate healing. Impressive, right? Now for the science behind it: Recent research suggests that the platelets in your blood have an [...]
